About Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery pertains to a type of treatment that restores vision by revising the shape of the cornea. Some vision problems, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism can be corrected with refractive procedures. At Navkar advanced eye, retina and dental care, we offer both LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) to treat, manage, and restore your vision. Depending on your cornea, preferences, and lifestyle, our expert ophthalmologists will help you select which treatment works best for you.

Best Candidates

Ideal patients for refractive surgery typically have good eye and overall health and an ample amount of corneal tissue. Because both LASIK and PRK require us to reshape the cornea, patients must have a thick cornea. However, PRK is generally suggested for patients with thinner corneal tissue or for those who engage in extremely active lifestyles. Most often, patients want surgery to avoid using contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses. While most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better with refractive surgery, it’s important to understand that some may still require corrective lenses after the surgery. During your consultation, one of our expert refractive surgery specialists will determine if LASIK or PRK is right for you and discuss realistic expectations.

Lasik/Femtolasik

LASIK eye surgery utilizes laser technology to create a small thin flap within the cornea near the part that needs reshaping. The flap is then positioned to reveal the middle layer of the cornea. This part of the cornea is reshaped using an excimer laser, and then the flap is repositioned in the correct spot. Generally, this procedure is quick, and you will only need about a day to recover.

PRK

During this surgery, the first step to PRK (compared to LASIK) is the extraction of the top corneal layer. Next, the middle layer is reformed with the same excimer laser device that we use in LASIK. Generally, a contact lens “band-aid” is positioned over the eye while the cornea starts to regrow new tissue. We can complete PRK surgeries within about 5 – 15 minutes; however, you may need additional recovery time so the cornea can heal and grow back.

Follow-Up

Following your refractive surgery, we will schedule several appointments to ensure your eyes heal correctly. The first follow-up visit is typically scheduled the day after your appointment and will continue for the next few months so we can monitor your healing. During these visits, we perform a quick vision exam and review your eye health.
